About this site

One of the primary aims of the Tachinid Recording Scheme is to gather together sightings of tachinids across the UK into a central database. This database will provide useful information for ecologists, conservationists and governmental bodies and will greatly enhance our knowledge of this group.

We are after records of all Tachinidae within the UK and Ireland (including Channel Islands) - that goes for sightings of adults and for reared host records. With this data we will be able to produce distribution maps and ascertain the UK status for each species. All we ask is that the records include all (or most) of the following:

Data Comments
Species name Old or new - we can work out the current name is you only have an old synonym
Date As accurate as possible or a range if collected in a Malaise trap. Tachinid emergence date if reared.
OS Grid Reference or Lat/Long Essential for mapping but for historic records of very rare species we can just take the location name and work out a grid reference ourselves
Location name
Collector’s name Or name of person running the trap
Determiner’s name Even if it is the same as the collector
Quantity/Sex How many & which sex
Method of capture Malaise trap, hand net, ex. larva, ex. pupa etc.
Host name If reared from a host - plus any rearing info like host capture date etc.
Vice county number (if known)

We will accept just about any format of record: cards, handwritten (etc) but preferably on computer - in just about any format - Recorder 3.3, Excel, Access etc. Just get the records to us and we will sort them out!

All record will go into the schemes mapping database. In addition we will make the records themselves available to people over the Internet (without collector/determiner names and without address details) but if you would particularly like some records made private then please let us know.
